Volume 16 of the recordings of Sidney Bechet opens with the remaining items taped during a concert at "Salle Pleyel" in Paris. The following date by a trio ranks among the most remarkable sessions Bechet made that year. Most of the songs stem from Louis Armstrong's song book. Bechet clearly tried to show his respect and blows licks and entire passages reminiscent of Armstrong. One month later it was back to more conventional procedures, recording with Claude Luter and his band. The eclectic choice of songs reflects the popularity of these musicians: standards ("Embraceable You"), oldies ("12th Street Rag"), show tunes ("Ol' Man River") plus a light classic and a French novelty.
